EnergySolutions Foundation Donates $200,000 to The Nature Conservancy for Boulder Watersheds Project
Salt Lake City, Utah - March 1, 2007 The EnergySolutions Foundation has contributed $200,000 to The Nature Conservancy's Boulder Watersheds project in Garfield County. The focus of this innovative effort is to help obtain conservation easements, launch education programs, and fuel new scientific research to safeguard key natural features in this spectacular region.
Adjacent to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, the Boulder Mountain area is linked by the Escalante River watershed. The region's natural gradient creates a great diversity of ecologically significant habitats. Riparian areas support a wealth of migratory birds, while the creeks provide habitat for rare fish and invertebrate species.
The Conservancy recently worked with local landowners and government partners to purchase a conservation easement on the Boulder Creek Canyon Ranch – a 298-acre property supporting important riparian habitat and agricultural soils. The Conservancy also worked with another set of landowners to establish an easement protecting a nearby Boulder property that boasts key wildlife habitat along Deer Creek.
"This region of Utah serves as a window into Utah's agricultural past and features important riparian areas that support a wealth of wildlife and we are happy to be part of the preservation effort," said Fraser Bullock, Chairman of the Foundation Board.
"We appreciate the $200,000 donation from the EnergySolutions Foundation," said Dave Livermore, the Conservancy's Utah State Director. "Generous support from individuals, foundations and companies has been crucial to our success in Boulder and in conserving at-risk habitats throughout the state."
The Boulder Watersheds project is a key part of the Conservancy's new Living Lands & Waters Campaign—the largest conservation initiative in state history—which will strive to raise $43 million in public and private funding over the next four years to implement conservation projects at eight priority landscapes throughout Utah.
"The EnergySolutions Foundation is proud to participate in this project. The Foundation was established to fund projects dedicated to cleaning up and enhancing Utah's environment for the benefit of current and future generations," said Bullock.
